Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
The European Commission warns Spain that “a residence permit is not a blank check”: {Translation}
– The European Commissioner for Migration Affairs and Migration, the Austrian Magnus Brunner, said this Tuesday that obtaining a residence permit in the European Union (EU) “is not a blank check” in a debate in the European Parliament on the latest regularization of migrants announced by the Government of Spain. “Each Member State must ensure that its decisions do not have negative consequences in other parts of the Union and this is a general principle of the European Union. A residence permit is not a blank check (…) European standards must be respected”, he said in the initial intervention.
– Brunner assured that the European Commission wants “solidarity and responsibility to be the guiding principles” of the EU’s migration policy, although he stressed that they are working to accelerate the returns of irregular migrants. “That is one of the pieces we have yet to see, the expulsions of people who are not allowed to remain in the EU. Today only one in five irregular migrants actually returned and I think it is time to change this and ensure that, as a general rule, irregular migrants leave the European Union”, he added.
– Regarding Spain’s decision, he maintained that migration remains a “shared challenge” and recalled the “respect” for the actions of each Member State on migration issues.
“That is also quite obvious and quite clear, and this is what we would expect to see now in relation also both to Spain’s most recently announced measures and to all other similar initiatives of the Member States”, he stressed. Spain continues to decline in the corruption perception index, falling another three places to 49th out of 182 countries: {Translation, summary}
– Transparency International’s 2025 index shows Spain’s corruption perception worsening, falling three places to 49th globally with a score of 55/100. This continues a decline from the previous year, and thus now finds itself behind Grenada, Saudi Arabia, Rwanda, Botswana, or Israel.
– While noting the recent approval of a national anti-corruption plan, the organisation warns that a lack of political consensus, the ongoing absence of state budgets, and deficiencies in transparency, access to information, and judicial independence guarantees are key impediments. The president of its Spanish chapter stated that regulations alone are insufficient without funding and effective implementation. Globally, the average score fell to 42, indicating a widespread decline. Denmark and Finland lead the rankings, while Venezuela and Somalia are at the bottom. The US sees ‘progress’ but doubts that Spain will comply with NATO if it insists on 2%– If it can, please share the secret formula: {Translation, summary}
– US Ambassador to NATO Matt Whitaker has stated that Spain will fail to meet the military capability targets assigned to it by the alliance if it maintains defence spending at only 2% of its GDP. He expressed scepticism that Spain could fulfil these NATO requirements without increasing its expenditure to approximately 5% of GDP. While acknowledging Spain’s claim of making “great progress” and being a “committed ally,”
– Whitaker challenged the economic feasibility of its approach. He remarked that the United States, with its clear understanding of defence procurement costs, finds the Spanish calculations difficult to reconcile. The ambassador encouraged Spain to share its purported cost-saving formula with other NATO members if it succeeds. These comments followed a meeting with Spain’s ambassador to NATO, Federico Torres, ahead of a key defence ministers’ meeting in Brussels. The discussion centred on funding, revisiting Spain’s prior refusal at the 2023 Hague summit to commit to spending beyond 2%. Despite this disagreement, Whitaker noted that continuous and regular dialogues are maintained with Spanish officials. Agricultural unions in Seville call on the government to ‘defend the Andalucian countryside’ against the Mercosur agreement: {Translation, summary}
– Four major Spanish agricultural unions (COAG, UPA, Asaja, and Agro-food Cooperatives) staged a significant tractor protest in Seville on Tuesday. Approximately 400 vehicles converged on the city from surrounding towns to demonstrate against the EU-Mercosur trade pact and other sectoral crises. The unions uniformly condemned the agreement for creating “unfair competition” against Andalusian produce. Leaders appealed to the central government for protective measures, effective dialogue, and urgent aid to counter the dual threats of Common Agricultural Policy funding cuts and losses from recent natural disasters, which they argue are rendering farms unviable and accelerating rural depopulation. They implored authorities to support those who “anchor the population in the territory.” Furthermore, the protest highlighted food safety concerns, with a call for stringent “border and origin controls” on non-EU imports and a consumer boycott of products lacking European standards. The demonstration was timed to coincide with a key European Parliament committee debate on the Mercosur agreement’s agricultural safeguard clauses.

Trains delayed and cancelled due to the strike in Malaga- “They have told us that they may or may not run”:
Translation, summary}
– Renfe’s Cercanías commuter network in Malaga province is severely disrupted by a continued strike, causing around thirty cancellations on the Malaga-Fuengirola and Malaga-Álora lines. Passengers, facing “operational incidents” according to Renfe, reported major inconvenience, including missed flights, due to a lack of clear information and long delays exacerbated by a separate incident with an ill person. The strike is led by the CGT and Alferro unions. Union representatives state cancellations are due to a lack of drivers and are likely to continue, as they reject a recent industry agreement. They argue it fails to provide concrete safety improvements or clear timelines for promised new jobs at Adif and Renfe, labelling it a mere “declaration of intentions” that neglects commuter rail users. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
Agenda 2030 Social Engineering– Usurping Parental Authority Again– More Sex Programming for 6th graders to prepare them for socialist defined “new realities”: {Translation, summary, editorial}
– The Councillor for Social Affairs, Juan García highlighted the municipal commitment to education in values, stressing the importance of developing preventive programmes adapted to new social and educational realities.
– During his address, García explained that these workshops seek to provide pupils with appropriate affective and sexual education that helps them develop emotional and social skills, eradicate discriminatory attitudes, and promote such values as equality, responsibility, and respect for diversity.
– Following a favourable assessment by teachers and school management teams {but not parents}, the programme has been extended this year to include three additional schools, bringing the total to twelve participating institutions.
– “For us it is essential to work on aspects such as equality, self-knowledge, self-esteem, and understanding of one’s own body and identity. The results obtained last year were excellent and showed the need to begin this educational work at an earlier age,” he said.
– Victoria Pita, a specialist from the Municipal Centre for Information for Women (CMIM), elaborated on the preventive focus of the programme, explaining that these workshops arose in response to requests made by teachers {despite many parental objections last year}. She emphasised that the main purpose is to provide educational tools that enable pupils to understand their affective and sexual development from a healthy and age-appropriate viewpoint, rooted in equality and respect.
{Editorial Comment:
– Despite the outcry when they tried this last year, the Vélez-Málaga Town Council again proudly presents its scheme of sexual education workshops for primary pupils, extending a pilot plan now covering twelve schools. Officials describe the initiative as preventive and value based, promoting equality and “self-knowledge from early childhood”. Yet the decision to bring explicit sexual-identity training into classrooms for children of eleven raises serious concerns. From what students reported to their parents last year, the content included info on advanced masturbation techniques, dangerous sex practices and details on “alternative genders” beyond male/female. Such programmes, framed as “educational tools,” risk blurring boundaries between biological understanding and ideological guidance. While authorities insist on what they consider trained experts and “healthy perspectives,” ignoring any parental concerns, the effort appears to normalise adult themes for minors under the guise of modernity and inclusion. The move reflects a broader political push to shape children’s moral and personal perceptions through state approved (radical socialist) doctrines on identity, diversity, and gender. However well intentioned, imposing sex education at so young an age disregards parental responsibility and the legitimate debate about when and how such sensitive matters should truly be addressed, and if public funds should finance it. No method to opt-out is mentioned. When this happened in Murcia in 2020, VOX intervened and parental approval was required (pin parental).
– Parents may try to opt out by requesting exemptions via school heads, under the LOMLOE family rights act (Ley Orgánica de Modificación de la LOE).

ALMÁCHAR
The Almáchar highway is reopened to traffic although work on the road continues: {Translation, summary}
– The MA-3112 road, which connects Almáchar with other points in the region, has been reopened to traffic, as confirmed by the affected town councils via their social media, after remaining closed due to damage caused by the intense rains of recent days. Nevertheless, cleaning and repair work continues actively until the necessary actions are completed.
– With this reopening, the number of roads cut off in La Axarquía is reduced, although two provincial routes remain out of service: the MA-3102 (Colmenar) and the MA-4105 (Canillas de Aceituno to Sedella), closed for safety reasons due to landslides and accumulation of materials on the carriageway. RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA
‘La Noche del Luchador’, Rincón de la Victoria’s evening of Andalusian kickboxing: {Translation, summary}
– Rincón de la Victoria will host ‘La Noche del Luchador’ on 28 March, crowning the Andalusian Kick Boxing champion. The main event at the Rubén Ruzafa indoor pavilion pits local fighter Mohame Attout against Córdoba’s José Camarón for the 62kg title. The evening, starting at 17:30, features 18 bouts in kick boxing and K-1, with 36 fighters from across Andalusia.
– Town officials highlight the event’s importance. Sports Councillor Antonio José Martín said it establishes the municipality as a contact sports epicentre. Mayor Francisco Salado added that it reinforces the town’s commitment to sport, promotes values like effort and respect, and stimulates the local economy.
– Tickets are on sale via participating clubs or at the pavilion box office. It is the 16th edition, organised with the Andalusian Kick Boxing and Muaythai Federation. HEALTH
The SAS virtual health card will allow procedures to be carried out by mobile phone at the end of March: {Translation, summary}
– The Minister, Antonio Sanz {pic}, confirmed this app will be operational from the end of March. Its primary purpose is to allow citizens to complete their healthcare administration and procedures remotely using their mobile phones. This is achieved by integrating the virtual card into the citizen’s existing digital folder, creating a unified digital access point.
– The strategy consolidates citizen health apps into a single “Salud Responde+” platform and includes plans for public digital training through regional help centres (ask at your Town Hall), all part of a broader digital transformation of the regional health service.
– The initiative is a core project within the wider Andalusian Digital Health Strategy, part of Agenda 2030, a plan designed to modernise regional health services through technology and digitalization. The virtual card specifically aims to improve accessibility and convenience, reducing the need for in-person visits for paperwork.
– {Remember, there is no law requiring you to have a smartphone, or to be able to use apps. They MUST provide and maintain alternative methods to perform these tasks manually; they cannot deny services to the disabled, those without digital-tech skills, or those without smartphones. Ref: Ley General de Derechos de las Personas con Discapacidad y de su Inclusión Social (Legislative Royal Decree 1/2013): This is the core national law. Spain’s Neurologists warn- spending more than 2 hours a day on social networks “significantly increases” the risk of mental problems & brain damage: {Translation, summary}
– For Safer Internet Day, the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) issued a stark warning: exceeding two hours of daily social media use constitutes “abuse” and significantly increases risks to mental and brain health. Their survey indicates over 70% of Spanish adults surpass the recommended 30-minute healthy limit. Usage is higher among women and young adults, with over 35% of all adults exceeding two hours daily. Neurologists directly link this overuse to heightened anxiety, depression, loneliness, and reduced concentration and learning capacity. They express acute concern for young people, citing research that associates excessive use with altered neurodevelopment in brain regions related to emotion and motivation, a loss of white matter supporting language, and a contribution to rising rates of adolescent depression and suicidal behaviour. The SEN urges greater public awareness of these cerebro-health risks. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/sociedad/neurologos-avisan-pasar-horas-dia-redes-sociales-20260209122121-nt_amp.html

Flip Flop Accusations by Elisa Mouliaá in the Errejón case– ‘Seeing what the Public Prosecutor’s Office has done, now I’m going to fight to the bitter end. I can’t stand injustice.’: {Translation, summary}
– Actress Elisa Mouliaá has reinstated her sexual assault complaint against politician Íñigo Errejón, having initially withdrawn it following what she now calls an anxiety attack.
– She did so after the Public Prosecutor’s Office concluded the encounter was consensual, a decision Mouliaá called “shameful” and hypocritical, vowing to continue. She explained her initial withdrawal was due to distress, exacerbated by other alleged victims declining to join the case. Mouliaá insists there was no explicit consent as required by law, citing Errejón’s own statement. She received financial support from the Sumar party for legal costs.
– Regarding the law on consent, Mouliaá stressed: “With the law as it is now, it says there must be explicit consent and there wasn’t any. That is, did he ask me if he could shove a French kiss down my throat? Did he ask, or was there any kind of consent for us to go to the room? No. He himself says in his statement that he took me by the arm and led me to a room.”
– {Sorry, I may be wrong about this in today’s crazy world, but to this pro family-values, Christian, conservative, white, child of the 50’s, this sounds more like after-the-fact regret than an assault; when at a party with people circulating about, you can’t just shove your tongue into someone’s mouth, and then proceed to walk them down a hall into a private room, without their cooperation. After the kiss she must surely have known what was on his mind, and walking down the hall was surely an opportunity to object. The fact that she didn’t vocally consent, and just went along for the ride, does not relieve her of the moral obligation of self preservation, does it? Are men now required to stop and get notarized permission to flirt with someone who appears to be cooperating with their advances, fearing the lover may change their minds the next day, and take them to court? This mis-application of the recently passed, well intentioned “only yes means yes” law will set a very dangerous precedent. Will it be the death of spontaneity and the magic of romance…things that make life worth living? Studies show some men refusing to now hire females, for fear of false accusations by disgruntled employees. But I’m just an old-timer, what do I know about today’s dating trends? The good news is there is pushback to this radical feminism, a growing movement of “trad-wives”, who embrace classic roles, taking great pride in running the house & raising the family, allowing her partner to focus on work, and together form the synergy to succeed as a team. You can find them and their support networks on social media. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/television/elisa-mouliaa-viendo-que-ha-hecho-fiscalia-ahora-si-que-voy-ir-muerte-no-soporto-las-injusticias_6932316_0.html
